A transient turned himself in today, saying he had strangled another man after the pair had spent the day drinking on New Year's Eve, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Anthony C. Gregoris, 43, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Theron Wallace Driscoll, 60.

Driscoll was found dead in his apartment at 15083 Verona Ave. in Clearwater on Jan. 5, after his family requested authorities check on him, Pinellas sheriff's officials said. There was no obvious signs of foul play in the apartment, the body was in the early stages of decomposition and investigators were told Driscoll had an array of medical problems.

Today, Gregoris turned himself in to St. Petersburg police and said he had strangled Driscoll, sheriff's authorities said.

Based on Gregoris' statement, detectives returned to Driscoll's apartment to begin a homicide investigation. Driscoll's body remains at the the local medical examiner's office; an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
