MANATEE COUNTY - A Palmetto man was charged with growing marijuana in his residence after his daughter told a school resource officer about the plants, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.
Patrick C. Allerton, 63, of the 6100 block of 63rd Avenue East, was arrested on charges of manufacturing a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
Deputies were notified by the school resource officer of what the girl said and conducted a welfare check on her around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Allerton consented to a search of the residence and deputies discovered eight marijuana plants growing in buckets in a spare bedroom, according to a report.
Allerton told authorities it was his first try at cultivating marijuana and the drug was for personal use.
Deputies also found seven grams of marijuana and more than $3,600 in cash in the man's dresser drawer, the report said.
The girl was taken to stay with a friend of the family.
