DADE CITY - Hoping to stanch an outbreak of distemper in the Dade City area, Pasco County Animal Services will offer $2 vaccines and booster shots for dogs that may be threatened by the disease.
The vaccine clinic is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Resurrection Park, 37214 Lock St. Booster shots will be given from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 at the same place.
The shots come with a dog license and a rabies vaccine.
Distemper is a virus that affects dogs' respiratory systems. The disease begins as a cough and can turn into pneumonia before killing the animal.
County officials reported last month they had detected a distemper outbreak in the Tommytown area, just north of downtown Dade City.
County officials urge dog owners within 16 miles of the outbreak area to have their pets inoculated.
The affected area is bounded by Frazee Hill Road, Prospect Road, Clinton Avenue and Puckett Road.
Information about the program is available from the county's Animal Services department at (352) 521-5194.
