Super Bowl Has Little Effect On Airports

Published: January 9, 2009

Airline passengers flying on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, will not be affected by airspace security restrictions, but general aviation pilots will have to abide by rules detailed in the Federal Aviation Administration's Notices to Airmen.

The day after Super Bowl typically is the busiest day for commercial airline passengers. About 35,000 passengers are expected to depart Tampa International on Feb. 2, airport director Louis Miller said.

That's about twice as many as usual, with the additional fliers taking chartered flights and extra flights that airlines will schedule.

Here are the pilots' restrictions at Hillsborough County airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Tampa International.

Tampa International: No restrictions for commercial flights. General aviation flights can arrive until 4 p.m. and depart between 4 p.m. and midnight with a waiver obtained 96 hours in advance for a flight plan and security screening.

Peter O. Knight: The airport is closed from 4 p.m. to midnight.

Tampa Executive (formerly Vandenberg Airport): No arrivals will be allowed from 4 p.m. to midnight. Departures follow the same requirements as those through Tampa International.
