Unwanted stress can crop up unexpectedly for people coping with serious illnesses.
Michelle Riba, a professor of psychiatry and associate chair for integrated medicine and psychiatric services at the University of Michigan Health System, says there are ways to steer clear of these unnecessary stresses. Here's one such tip:
Keep medical appointments.
Whether it's a routine checkup or you are seriously ill, Riba emphasizes the importance of budgeting time and money for doctor visits. Many injuries and illnesses can be prevented that way. It's important to remember that making your health a priority now will help avoid unwanted stresses, including financial strain, later.
Riba notes that many hospitals have funds for people who can't afford medications and hospital/doctor visits.
Asking for 90-day amounts of medications to decrease co-pays is sometimes helpful.
