NEW PORT RICHEY - The Pasco County Health Department issued a rabies alert today after a stray cat tested positive for the disease.
The department issued an advisory reminding people to avoid handling strange animals and not to take in strays.
Rabies can affect animals and people. Overall, domestic animals account for about 10 percent of rabies cases, county officials said.
Pet owners should have dogs and cats older than 4 months vaccinated against the disease. They should also keep their animals from running loose in order to avoid contact with wildlife.
More information about rabies is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/rabies.
