Armwood senior defensive end Ryne Giddins verbally committed to South Florida on Saturday.
Giddins, a consensus national top 100 recruit, chose the hometown Bulls over newly crowned national champion Florida, which was his other finalist among more than 70 Division I scholarship offers.
Giddins is arguably USF's most highly decorated recruit in program history. This season he was honored as a USA Today All-American, the CSTV National Defensive Player of the Year and was selected for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, though he was unable to play in the Jan. 3 game because of a foot injury.
Giddins was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team selection in his junior and senior seasons. He finished his prep career as the Hawks' all-time leader in sacks, an accomplishment made possible after a junior season in which he tallied a school single-season record 21 sacks.
SOFTBALL: Newsome coach Jessi Kowal-Ray, the 2007 Tribune Softball Coach of the Year, is stepping down after three seasons but will stay on as an assistant.
Ray led the Wolves to the Class 5A state final four in 2007 and guided the team to a 20-8 record and region final appearance this past season. Assistant Dawn Vanella will be the new head coach.
