SARASOTA - Climatologists say Florida saw warmer than average temperatures last year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration analyzes temperatures nationwide to gain a broad perspective on climate trends. A report said temperatures in Florida last year ran slightly above average, despite a cooler than usual November. Atypical cold snaps in November and December brought annual temperatures for the state close to average after a hotter-than-normal summer.

Paul Close is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin. He says lack of wind led to many of those warmer-than-normal nights across the state.

The state's annual temperature in 2008 was 70.8.

Nationally, 2008 dipped to near average, at 53 degrees - the coolest year since 1997.
