NEW PORT RICHEY - Parents and students might want to check those book bags one more time.
Brochures were distributed among ninth- and 10th-graders at Gulf and Mitchell high schools and to students at Gulf, Paul R. Smith and Seven Springs middle schools in anticipation of the opening of Anclote High School at the start of the 2009-10 school year.
The school is in the Holiday area, next door to Paul R. Smith Middle School, 1410 Sweetbriar Drive.
The Pasco County School District formed a boundary subcommittee in early November. The panel includes the principals from potentially affected schools, parents of students from those schools and representatives from the district's departments of transportation, exceptional student education, planning, and administration.
The subcommittee analyzed the impact of various boundary change options and formulated what it considered the best configuration for the redrawn high school attendance boundaries.
"We really strive to get input from lots of people in the whole process and to hear everyone's concerns," said Chris Williams, district's director of planning. "Developing school boundaries is a complicated process with many challenges. We work hard to make sure people understand how and why decisions are made."
The district is publishing the four-page brochure to ensure that parents have a clear understanding of the redrawn boundaries.
The boundary changes will have no impact on students who will graduate from Gulf and Mitchell high schools this year. In addition, because Anclote High School will not have a senior class in its inaugural year, the boundary change will not apply to current Gulf or Mitchell juniors.
A meeting will be held to help clarify things for future Anclote High School families at 7 p.m. Monday, in the Paul R. Smith Middle School cafeteria, 1410 Sweetbriar Drive, Holiday.
