Published: January 11, 2009

GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides.

Today: Bill Miller.

Captain David Graham reports that white bait is available in Tarpon Springs and producing good catches of trout, redfish and jacks. Trout and jacks have been caught on the deeper grass flat areas of Anclote Key, while reds are holding around structure in the Anclote River. High-jumping ladyfish are also schooling in the river and offer fast action on jigs and flies.

Area anglers traveling to the east coast are finding hot sailfish action. January is typically prime time for sails, and this year is proving no exception. Captains Terry Stansill and Greg Bogdan, fishing from Sailfish Marina in Palm Beach, have been catching 10 to 20 sails per trip using live goggle eyes and greenbacks.

There are new grouper rules in effect, and they are somewhat confusing to anglers. The recreational bag limit for gag grouper is two per person in all Gulf waters, federal and state. The recreational bag limit for red grouper in state waters in two per person.

In federal waters it is one per person. Gag grouper will be closed in all waters from Feb. 1 until March 31. Red grouper will be closed in federal waters from Feb. 15 until March 14. It is not closed in state waters (inside nine miles).

Captain Bill Miller hosts "Hooked on Fishing" on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Sports Network, Channel 47.
