DeFUNIAK SPRINGS - A Walton County sheriff's deputy charged with drug trafficking is the third to be fired by the
department in recent days.
Sheriff Mike Adkinson said Christopher J. Barnes was arrested for trafficking controlled substances such as Oxycontin, hydrocodone, for obtaining prescriptions by fraud and for doctor
shopping. The sheriff said Barnes would be fired Saturday.
No further information was released, but the sheriff said they were "taken aback when a member commits such acts."
Barnes was the third Walton deputy so far this month. Stephen Hornsby was fired after an arrest early Thursday in Geneva, Ala. Authorities said he behaved "way out of bounds" in a traffic stop. Cullen Coraine was fired Jan. 1 after his arrest on DUI charges, which later were dismissed.
