A 50-year-old soldier collapsed Sunday morning during physical fitness training with his unit in St. Petersburg and later died, according to a U.S. Army Reserve Medical Command news release.
The soldier's name isn't being released, pending next-of-kin notification. His name likely won't be available until Tuesday, Maj. William D. Ritter said.
The soldier was an active guard and reserve soldier assigned to the Army Reserve. He was assigned to Company B, 345th Combat Support Hospital, St. Petersburg.
During a company run, the soldier complained he wasn't feeling well, then collapsed and started having a seizure, Ritter said.
He died at Bayfront Medical Center. Preliminary reports indicate he died of a heart attack, Ritter said.
The soldier, who lived in St. Petersburg, was divorced and had three children. The soldier, who was raised in Mississippi, had spent about 25 years years in the military and was a motor sergeant in charge of taking care of vehicles for his unit, Ritter said.
The 345th Combat Support Hospital works to "deploy personnel and equipment to a theater of operations to provide medical care as needed," according to the release.
