TAMPA - Two Chihuahuas died tonight from smoke inhalation after a fire started in the attic of their owners' Rogers Avenue home, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said.
Firefighters entered the smoke-filled house about 7 p.m. to find the source of the blaze and found the unconscious Chihuahuas, Wade said.
The dogs were taken outside and given medical treatment, but the family pets did not survive, Wade said.
The dogs' names and ages were not immediately available, fire rescue officials said.
The fire was under control in 15 minutes, and no other injuries were reported.
Authorities say that the homeowners, Ramon Tapales and his wife, had gone out for a jog. When they returned, they saw three firetrucks, one ladder truck and firefighters in front of their house, Wade said.
Investigators say it appears that electrical problems in the attic started the fire at 4420 Rogers Ave. Damage is estimated at $70,000. The American Red Cross is helping the family with clothing and temporary shelter.
