TAMPA - Rock 'n' roll outlaws, this could be your big break.
Jobsite Theater is looking for actors who can sing rock – real rock – for an upcoming musical by former Tampa-area music scene mainstay Joe Popp.
The play is called "Pericles," and it's based on Shakespeare's work of the same name, according to Jobsite's artistic director David Jenkins.
It's set in the underworld, not the one of myth and legend but the one on "The Sopranos." The lead characters yet to be cast are all Mafioso-types.
Jenkins stresses that actors seeking the roles need to be able to sing rock. And not a watered-down variety of it.
"Some people may consider 'Rent' to be rock," Jenkins cautions. "Joe Popp does not consider 'Rent' to be rock.
"We need butch guys who are true rock singers and who can act and are suitable for the mob genre," Jenkins says. It's been a tall order so far, as the regular talent pool hasn't turned up anyone so far.
"It's a real niche need," Jenkins admits.
The play opens in August and Jenkins and the company are hoping to have the roles filled so that workshops can be held, keys can be adjusted and so forth.
Interested actors should contact Jenkins at david.jenkins@tbpac.org or at (813) 222-1092.
Curtis Ross can be reached at (813) 259-7568.
