The recent fiasco at the Hillsborough supervisor of elections office seems to be compounded by a considerable lack of oversight by the county.
In reading "Auditor: Elections Office Unhelpful" (Jan. 8), there were many glaring points made. If any employee was found not to comply with the auditor's request, that employee should face some sort of discipline. Next, with Ernst & Young doing an audit, which is not cheap, why did county commissioners authorize $300,000 for a financial adviser to help? What do we pay the county auditor for?
This whole affair seems to be costing taxpayers more every week. With a county staff the size we have, there is certainly the expertise to get it sorted out. But the larger looming question is why it was allowed to get so out of hand in the first place. That is what the county commissioners should be asking.
