Broncos Hire McDaniels

Published: January 13, 2009

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Josh McDaniels, the man behind the New England Patriots' scoring machine, inherits an offense in Denver that needs only an oil change.

The defense? Well, that needs an overhaul.

McDaniels, 32, signed a four-year deal believed to be worth about $8 million with the Broncos to replace Mike Shanahan.

McDaniels guided an offense that had led New England to 18 straight victories before a stunning loss to the New York Giants in last season's Super Bowl. That team scored an NFL-record 75 touchdowns and 589 points.

Under McDaniels' guidance, Tom Brady threw for a record 50 touchdowns in '07. McDaniels' reputation grew stronger in '08 when Brady was lost with a knee injury in the opener and Matt Cassel led the Pats to an 11-5 record.

COWBOYS: Linebacker Anthony Spencer was arrested over the weekend after a disturbance outside a downtown Indianapolis nightclub.

LIONS: Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz interviewed for a second time about the team's head coaching vacancy.

SAINTS: Former Bucs offensive line assistant Aaron Kromer was promoted from running backs coach to offensive line coach.

TITANS: Rookie running back Chris Johnson was scheduled for an MRI exam after a high ankle sprain knocked him out of the Titans' playoff loss to Baltimore on Saturday. Also, veteran center Kevin Mawae needs surgery on a partially torn triceps tendon in his right arm and will miss the Feb. 8 Pro Bowl in Honolulu.
