Published: January 13, 2009

An 83-year-old Spring Hill man is in critical condition tonight after he did not shift his car into the "park" position and the vehicle ran him over, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Alfonse Kress was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital after the rear driver's side tire rolled over him, troopers say.

This is what happened about 5:30 p.m. at Kress' home on Montego Street, according to the highway patrol:

Kress was backing out of his garage to move the Toyota to the driveway. Kress shut the engine off and got out, but did not put the Camry's transmission in "park." The car began to roll backwards on the inclined driveway and Kress tried to stop the Toyota by standing behind it.

Kress' wife saw what was happening from the couple's house and tried to help him, but Kress lost his balance at the end of the driveway and fell in the middle of Montego Street. The Camry's left rear tire ran over Kress and continued to roll backward until it struck Kress' mailbox.

The crash with the mailbox caused $250 damage to the Toyota, according to a written statement from the highway patrol. Kress' wife was not hurt.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
