A fifth-grade student at Mort Elementary in Tampa was struck by a vehicle about a block from the school today, school district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.
The boy, 12, was walking in a crosswalk at 17th Street and Bearss Avenue when he was hit by a van, according to Hillsborough County deputies. The van had been stopped at the crosswalk about 12:30 p.m. today when the driver let his foot off the brake as the boy stepped in front of the vehicle.
The van was heading about 1 to 2 miles an hour at the time. The boy was knocked to the pavement.
The boy was conscious but had some head and leg pain, Cobbe said.
The child was taken by ambulance to University Community Hospital. He had been leaving school early because it is an early release day, Cobbe said. The district spoke with the child's grandmother, and she was planning to meet him at the hospital, Cobbe said.
Mort is at 1806 E. Bearss Ave.
The van driver will not be charged, deputies say.
