A day after he was run over by his car, an 83-year-old Spring Hill man has died, the Florida Highway Patrol said today.
Alfonse Kress was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday after the rear driver's side tire rolled over him, troopers say. He died overnight as a result of his injuries.
This is what happened about 5:30 p.m. at Kress' home on Montego Street, according to the highway patrol:
Kress was backing out of his garage to move the Toyota to the driveway. Kress shut the engine off and got out but did not put the Camry's transmission in "park." The car began to roll backwards on the inclined driveway and Kress tried to stop the Toyota by standing behind it.
Kress' wife saw what was happening and tried to help him, but Kress lost his balance at the end of the driveway and fell. The Camry's left rear tire ran over Kress and the car continued to roll backward until it struck the mailbox.
