ZEPHYRHILLS - Nearly a year after floodwaters damaged the downtown fire station, the city council has given the fire department permission to repair the building.
The estimated cost is $716,000, though that figure doesn't include furniture or expansion of the adjoining drainage pond. The project is expected to eat up the city's Penny for Pasco revenue as well as the entire fire impact-fee account.
Some council members feared that costs could escalate after construction begins because of the age of the building. Councilwoman Jodi Wilkeson suggested using a contract that holds the architect and contractor to a maximum price so the city wouldn't get stuck with costly changes.
Wilkeson said the city should appeal to local businesses and residents to donate furniture and appliances for the station.
Firefighters have been working out of the World War II Barracks Museum at the city airport since the Jan. 23 flood.
