Teams Ready For Districts

It's tournament time as girls soccer district tournaments begin Monday with Class 6A-7 action at Countryside and 4A-8 play at Hudson. The two teams in the championship advance to region play.

Here's a breakdown of the four districts involving Pasco County schools:

CLASS 6A-7 AT COUNTRYSIDE: Schedule: Monday - Alonso (4) vs. Gaither (5), 6 p.m.; Countryside (6) vs. Sickles (3), 8 p.m. Jan. 21 - St. Petersburg (2) vs. Alonso-Gaither winner, 6 p.m.; Mitchell (1) vs. Sickles-Countryside winner, 8 p.m. Jan. 23 - Championship, 7 p.m. Need To Know: Mitchell, which advanced to the region finals last season, is the top seed and awaits the Sickles-Countryside winner in the semifinals. St. Petersburg and Sickles finished with 2-2-1 district records and played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season. The Barons were awarded the No. 2 seed, and the first-round bye, because of their win against Alonso. The tiebreaker had to go to the fourth-seeded team because both St. Pete and Sickles lost to Mitchell.

CLASS 5A-7 AT RIDGEWOOD: Schedule: Tuesday - Ridgewood (4) vs. Wesley Chapel (5), 7 p.m. Jan. 21 - Land O' Lakes (2) vs. Central (3), 6 p.m.; Ridgewood-Wesley Chapel winner vs. River Ridge (1), 8 p.m. Jan. 23 - Championship, 7 p.m. Need To Know: River Ridge won another district title and was undefeated in district play. Land O' Lakes was second, with both district losses to River Ridge. The Royal Knights' only losses this season were to Mitchell and Lakeland Jenkins.

CLASS 4A-8 AT HUDSON: Schedule: Monday - Hernando (8) vs. Sunlake (9), 6:30 p.m. Tuesday - Zephyrhills (2) vs. Wiregrass Ranch (7), 5:30 p.m.; Hudson (1) vs. Hernando-Sunlake winner, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 - Gulf (4) vs. Nature Coast (5), 5:30 p.m.; Springstead (3) vs. Pasco (6), 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 - Zephyrhills-Wiregrass winner vs. Springstead-Pasco winner, 5:30 p.m.; Hudson-Hernando-Sunlake winner vs. Gulf-Nature Coast winner, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 - Championship, 7:30 p.m.. Need To Know: Hudson ran through the district schedule 15-0-1, with the tie coming at Gulf on Nov. 17. Zephyrhills finished second after losing Laurren McCloud early in the season. Gulf finished third, one point behind the Bulldogs.

CLASS 2A-9 AT TAMPA PREP: Schedule: Tuesday - Bishop McLaughlin (2) vs. Cambridge (3), 5 p.m.; Tampa Prep (1) vs. Calvary Christian (4), 7 p.m. Jan. 23 - Championship, 7 p.m. Need To Know: When Academy at the Lakes chose not to field a girls team this season, it reduced this district to four teams. Tampa Prep is clearly the class of the district. The Terrapins and Bishop McLaughlin finished with 9-3-1 records, but Tampa Prep's losses were to Newsome, Berkeley Prep and Jacksonville Episcopal, while the Hurricanes lost to Lakeland Santa Fe, Tampa Catholic and Tampa Prep.
