ST. PETERSBURG - A new third jersey will give the Rays a slightly different look for select games during the 2009 season.
The alternate jersey, unveiled Wednesday by the team, is similar to the dark blue top the players wear during batting practice and in spring training. It will make its official debut Friday, May 1, when the Rays host the Red Sox at Tropicana Field.
There are two key differences, the most noticeable a light blue piping that runs around the sleeves and the collar and goes down the front of the jersey. The new tops also feature an enlarged sunburst – 40 percent larger, according to the team, than the burst on the existing jerseys.
"Rays apparel, marked by our signature sunburst and light blue accents, has been embraced by fans throughout the state of Florida and across the nation," Rays president Matt Silverman said in a press release. "The amplified sunburst on our new alternate jersey represents the brightness of our organization and its growing impact throughout the Tampa Bay region and central Florida."
The material is also different from the Rays' regular game jerseys, as it is made of a lighter mesh. Pitcher Scott Kazmir, who gave the jerseys a thumbs-up even though he hadn't tried one on yet, said the material reminds him of some of the old Devil Rays jerseys – in a good way.
