ST. PETERSBURG - The Rays agreed to a one-year contract Wednesday with outfielder Gabe Gross, avoiding arbitration by signing him to a deal worth $1,255,000.
Gross arrived from Milwaukee on April 22 in exchange for minor-league pitcher Josh Butler and became a valuable cog in the Rays' outfield rotation, hitting .242 with 13 homers in 302 at-bats. His finest hour probably came on June 1, when his walk-off homer in the 10th inning beat the White Sox.
By signing Gross, the Rays have four arbitration-eligible players remaining: Willy Aybar, Grant Balfour, Jason Bartlett and Dioner Navarro. They hope to get each of them under contract by next Tuesday, the deadline for players and teams to exchange arbitration figures. The Rays have a policy of not negotiating with players after figures are exchange, choosing instead to go to a hearing, but they have generally been successful in getting deals done before that point in recent years.
