Appaloosa **
Ed Harris directs and co-stars in this old-fashioned Western, based on the book by Robert B. Parker, about a pair of law-and-order types (Harris and Viggo Mortensen) who stand up to Jeremy Irons' evil tyrant of a rancher in spite of overwhelming odds. Renee Zellwegger is the squinty new widow in town, whose "charm" threatens to drive a wedge between Harris and Mortensen.
R, 114 minutes
Brideshead Revisited **½
Speaking of Jeremy Irons and career-making BBC miniseries he starred in before being relegated to accented villain roles, Evelyn Waugh's tale of religion and class among the early-20{+t}{+h}-century English upper crust has been given feature-length treatment. Julian Jarrold ("Becoming Jane") directs Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon.
PG-13, 135 minutes
Swing Vote **
It's hard to say whether enough time has passed since Nov. 4 to make the idea of an uninformed loser (Kevin Costner) with the deciding vote in a presidential contest funny. The improbable set-up has to do with a conscientious daughter (Madeline Carroll), an unplugged voting machine and other plot devices. Kelsey Grammer is the incumbent battling Dennis Hopper for that deciding vote.
PG-13, 119 minutes
