ST. PETERSBURG - Attacks on cabdrivers have dropped dramatically since police offered safety tips after a spate of robberies from January 2008 through July.
Cabdrivers were robbed 16 times in the city in the first seven months of 2008. After police met with drivers' representatives on July 26, there has been one robbery.
Authorities credit better screening of customer calls to cab companies. A cab company owner also credited awareness training for cabdrivers.
Police report no progress in finding who killed cabdriver Cyril Obinka, 43, on May 3. Officers, however, say they have promising leads in the unsolved slaying of Linda Faison, 39, on July 12.
