TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says the FBI made a big mistake when it reported to Homeland Security that 500 uniforms had gone missing from the agency last year.
The number was included in a terrorist threat assessment report on the upcoming Super Bowl in Tampa that was obtained by The Associated Press this week.
In the report, Homeland Security expressed concern that criminals could impersonate law enforcement personnel and noted the large number of missing uniforms from the Tampa-area agency.
But sheriff's office spokesman J.D. Callaway said today that five agency outfits — not 500 — went missing last year, and they were casual items worn by evidence technicians that do not resemble official deputies' uniforms.
The FBI acknowledged the mistake, noting that the report was never meant for public consumption. Spokesman Dave Couvertier said someone confused the name brand of the uniform trousers, 5.11 Tactical, with the number of uniforms missing.
