SHADY HILLS - One week removed from the first loss of the season and Tampa Prep had a few demons to excise. Unfortunately for Bishop McLaughlin, they just happened to be the next team on the schedule.
The Terrapins dominated the Hurricanes, 53-14, inducing a running clock with 3:50 remaining in the third period.
"I think our kids were really ready to play today," Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon said. "No high school kid likes to practice for four days. They like to play someone, so I think our kids were excited to come out and play today. It's our first district matchup with them, so now we've played everybody in the district one time."
Tampa Prep (16-1) outscored Bishop McLaughlin (12-3), 27-1, in the first 13-minutes, 40-seconds of the first half. Hurricanes center Chris Congemi scored the squad's first point on a free throw with 5:48 remaining in the first period. The drought didn't end until Frank Moore sank two more free throws at the 2:20 mark of the second period.
The Hurricanes didn't help their cause considering they accumulated 14 team fouls in the first half, compared to Tampa Prep's six. Of those 22 foul shot opportunities in the first two periods, the Terrapins made good on 14.
Tampa Prep was led by Jay Bowie's 14 points. Teammates Tyler Raquet and Devontae Morgan each had eight. Bowie also collected 14 rebounds, essentially giving Bishop McLaughlin less shot opportunities.
"We could have played somewhat of a game with them if we don't turn the ball over on offense so much and getting rushed," said Bishop McLaughlin interim coach Les Parker. "It wasn't our turnovers, it our rushing after we beat the [full court] press. We'd beat the press and then turn it over. Coach Fenlon and I have been friends a log time. He's an outstanding coach and they took it took us. We got our butt beat tonight. As simple as that."
Chris Congemi's seven points led Bishop McLaughlin. Mike Holmes added three points, Frank Moore and Devin Towson each had two.
Tampa Prep will host Tampa Catholic tonight at 7: 30, while the Hurricanes will travel to Berean Academy Jan. 22.
