PEMBROKE PINES - A South Florida medical student was among the survivors of the US Airways flight that landed in New York's Hudson River.
Alberto Panero of Pembroke Pines was in the Big Apple interviewing for a residency program. The Nova Southeastern University student was on his way Thursday to another interview in North Carolina when the Charlotte-bound plane got in trouble. Authorities believe a flock of birds crossed the jetliner's path and took out both engines.
Gloria Panero had heard from her son around 3 p.m., when he called to say he had been offered a one-year residency at Broward General Medical Center. When he called about half an hour later, she says he had even more excitement in his voice: He told her he had survived a major plane crash.
