Ozzwald, a Belgian Malinois from Holland who served as a member of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, has died.
The dog, known as "Ozzi," was 8 years old. He died from complications of gastric dilatation-volvulus, also known as bloat.
Ozzwald worked with the sheriff's office for seven years, serving as Deputy Brian Biegel's partner. About six years ago, they were named the "K9 Team of the Year."
Together, they seized more than 500 pounds of marijuana and five kilos of cocaine and were involved in the arrest of more than 65 suspects, a sheriff's office news release states. They were sent to Pensacola to help with recovery efforts after Hurricane Ivan and worked with the U.S. Secret Service during Vice President-Elect Joe Biden's trip to the Sarasota area last year.
Ozzwald's memorial service will be held Tuesday at the Driftwood Kennels, on Laurel Road in Nokomis.
