Tuskeegee Airman's Widow to Speak

Mildred Wilson, the widow of Tuskeegee airman Wilmer H. Wilson, will give the keynote address at the African American Club of West Pasco's observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday Monday.

Wilson, an educator and community activist, will speak at Union Missionary Baptist Church, 6235 Pine Hill Road in Port Richey. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

People are asked to bring nonperishable food items, which will be donated to The Volunteer Way nonprofit organization.

St. Leo

University Welcomes Tampa Poet Laureate
Tampa's poet laureate, James Tokley, will give a reading at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saint Leo University.

Tokley, Tampa's first poet laureate, has delivered inaugural poems for Gov. Charlie Christ, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco. Among the poems he will read Monday is one he submitted for consideration at President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration.

The event will be at the university's student community center, located on the main campus at 33701 State Road 52. The public is invited.

Dade City

2 Churches Hold Local Events

Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, 14440 Seventh St. in Dade City, will hold a scholarship breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday. Deacon Roney Webster will speak. Proceeds from the $7 breakfast will go toward scholarships for Pasco County students. The event also will include music and a performance from Ebony Pride.

At The Church of the Living Christ, 13415 Johnson St., Dade City, will host a commemorative program at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. G.I. Bradley, pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Palmetto, will speak. The program also will feature singing, a community choir, praise dancing and refreshments

HOLIDAY CLOSINGS

Pasco County government offices, courts, community centers and libraries will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Government offices will reopen Tuesday at their regularly scheduled times.

Here are other schedule changes:

• County recreation complexes will operate on a holiday schedule and be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday.

•The tax collector's office will be closed Saturday as well as Monday.

• The Pasco County Animal Control Shelter will be closed Monday. Animal control officers will be on 24-hour emergency standby. The shelter will open at noon Tuesday.

• Pasco County Public Transportation will provide regular fixed route transit service for west and east Pasco on Monday. Call (727) 834-3322 or (352) 521-4587.

• The Pasco County Resource Recovery Facility and the east Pasco Transfer Station will be closed Monday to the public, but open to commercial haulers.

•Government offices in Dade City, San Antonio, St. Leo, Zephyrhills, New Port Richey and Port Richey will be closed Monday.
