Several Area Swimmers On All-State Team
Seven local swimmers were named Friday to the 2008-09 Pinch A Penny All-State Swimming and Diving Team.
Sickles senior Conor Swanson, Newsome senior Jason Taylor, Clearwater Central Catholic senior Cameron Martin and Berkeley Prep senior Kyle Dent were among the 13 boys honored, while Northeast senior Megan Romano, Seminole junior Kaitlin Frehling and Countryside junior Melanie Margalis were among the 12 girls on the team.
In addition, Sickles' Gregg Cooke, Jesuit's Vinny Donnelly, Tampa Prep's Grace Fredlake, Palm Harbor University's Wes Stearns and Countryside's Rachel Burns received honorable-mention recognition.
FOOTBALL: Plant senior tight end Orson Charles, Armwood senior defensive end Ryne Giddins and Countryside senior punter Pete Kontodiakis were named to the 2008 MaxPreps All-American Football Team. The three area players were selected to the first team.
In addition, Plant junior linebacker Mike Mirabella was named to the MaxPreps Junior All-American second team, while Chamberlain sophomore linebacker James Wilder Jr. was named to the MaxPreps Sophomore All-American first team.
SOFTBALL: Former USF catcher Laura Wolf is the new Gaither coach.
Wolf replaces Al Alcala, who stepped down last summer after three seasons as coach. The Cowboys went 21-8 in 2008 and lost to Durant in the Class 6A region quarterfinals.
While at USF, Wolf was an All-Big East selection and became the program's second all-time leader in runners picked off and top-10 in fewest stolen bases allowed. She graduated from USF last spring.
