A fire late Saturday night heavily damaged a home's garage in St. Petersburg but spared the house from all but smoke damage.
The home's owner and cat escaped the fire at 4636 9th St. N., St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue said.
Firefighters arrived at the single-story frame house about 11:30 p.m. and saw heavy smoke coming from the garage and roof vents.
Firefighters cut off the flames in a breezeway leading to the house before they reached the rest of the structure.
The fire caused heavy damage to the garage and moderate smoke damage to the house, the fire department said. The damage estimate is $10,000.
The fire damage to the electrical system forced power to be cut off and the owner and pet are staying with relatives.
An inspector will investigate the cause, the fire department said.
