TAMPA - Beginning Tuesday, consumers who participated in a recent class-action cosmetics settlement can pick up free makeup from certain department stores.
Consumers can show up at the stores involved in the lawsuit and receive one product valued at about $20. Consumers must sign a legal document saying they bought makeup from the store between May 29, 1994, and July 16, 2003. No sales receipt is necessary.
The lawsuit claimed manufacturers and retailers set prices too high and conspired to never offer discounts. Defendants did not admit wrongdoing but agreed to hand out free cosmetics, according to cosmeticssettlement.com.
As part of the settlement, $175 million of cosmetics will be distributed nationwide.
The distribution will continue on a first-come, first-served basis for seven days or while supplies last. No rainchecks will be issued.
Consumers cannot select any product they want. Manufacturers will provide products to choose from.
Local stores involved include Macy's, Dillards, Nordstrom, Nieman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Brands include Chanel, Christian Dior, Clarins, Estee Lauder, Clinique and Lancome.
