Lines are already forming for free makeup being given away because of a class-action lawsuit.
At the cosmetics counter at Macy's at WestShore Plaza, the line snaked out the door this into the cold as customers stood in line to get a free soap. Saks Fifth Avenue cosmetic counters were handing out under-eye cream. Lines were similarly long at the Westfield Citrus Park mall.
Starting today, $175 million worth of free cosmetics products will be given away. The giveaway will last seven days or while supplies last, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Customers are entitled to one free product, and stores will only distribute the brands they ordinarily sell.
The lawsuit that prompted the giveaway alleged that department stores and cosmetics companies conspired to sell products at the manufacturers' suggested price and never at a discount. According to the Cosmetics Settlement Web site, the action was filed on behalf of consumers who purchased cosmetics between May 1994 and July 2003.
Consumers must sign a legal document saying they bought makeup from the store between May 29, 1994, and July 16, 2003. No sales receipt is necessary.
Local stores involved include Macy's, Dillard's, Nordstrom, Nieman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Brands include Chanel, Christian Dior, Clarins, Estee Lauder, Clinique and Lancome.
