TAMPA - Publix Super Markets will hit a major milestone next month by opening its 1,000th store.
Lakeland-based Publix expects to open the supermarket in St. Augustine on Feb. 5. Local dignitaries from St. Johns County and the Florida Historical Society will attend ceremonies, a company news release says.
Publix continues to add to its total with its recent purchase of 49 stores from the Albertsons chain, many of which are reopening now as Publix supermarkets. At least 714 Publix stores are in Florida, where the company accounts for about 40 percent of the grocery market, according to figures from the Nielsen Co.'s Trade Dimensions unit.
Wal-Mart Supercenters rank second with about 24 percent of the state grocery market, followed by Winn-Dixie, which has about 13 percent. Publix also has stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
The company was founded in 1930 in Winter Haven by the late George Jenkins.
