Wharton senior quarterback Andrew Clifford was visited at school on Tuesday by South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier. Clifford said the meeting went well and Spurrier extended an invitation to visit the campus on Jan. 31.
Clifford said Spurrier has not offered him a scholarship, but said "it looks pretty good."
"They liked my tape and they seemed real excited," Clifford said. "(Spurrier) said he liked my release and the way I throw to the corner. He liked the way we did stuff."
Clifford was the third-leading passer in Hillsborough County with 2,263 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was selected to play in the FACA North vs. South all-star game and was named a Tribune All-Hillsborough County honorable mention.
South Carolina is the first school to invite Clifford on an official visit. Liberty, University of Alabama-Birmingham and Nebraska have shown interest.
"He said he was shocked no one had picked up one me yet," he said.
Spurrier was in Tampa just weeks ago for the Outback Bowl. In 2006, he recruited four-star prospect and former Jefferson quarterback Stephen Garcia.
