HUDSON - Deputies have arrested a suspect in the robbery and beating of a woman this morning, Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll said.
Investigators say Charles Fredrick Grant followed Bridget Ware to her home on Hazel Avenue from the Bank of America on State Road 52 and pulled into her driveway beside her. While Grant chatted with the woman, whose passenger-side window was already rolled down, he reached in as Ware grabbed her bank envelope from the passenger seat, according to a report. He walked around her Isuzu Rodeo and got into the back seat, and then when she tried to get out he punched her and pushed her back inside, the report states.
For a short while Grant wouldn't allow Ware to leave and the pair struggled over her Rodeo's keys, and then he finally got her key and the bank envelope containing $100 from her front shirt pocket, the report states.
Grant removed his temporary license plate from his silver Jeep Liberty and sped off west down Hazel Avenue, according to the report. Ware flagged down a witness who saw the Jeep turn north onto Cobra Way and then do a U-turn to head south. The witness told deputies the Jeep's driver flashed a black handgun. The Jeep was last seen by the witness turning west onto Hudson Avenue.
Pasco deputies spotted the vehicle a few minutes later as it reached speeds of up to 100 mph on Little Road. The Jeep crossed over north lanes while driving south and didn't stop for sheriff's cruisers and their flashing lights and sirens. At Little and Fivay roads, according to a report, Grant jumped out and ran to a barn with several deputies and a police dog closing in on him.
Grant, 22, was arrested at 9041 Scott Street, and faces charges of robbery, false imprisonment, auto burglary, simple battery, fleeing to elude and resisting arrest without violence. He was also cited for reckless driving.
Once at the Land O' Lakes Jail, Grant, of 8624 Roseanne Blvd., New Port Richey, agreed to do field sobriety tests and he said he hadn't had alcohol but had taken cocaine and Xanex this morning, according to a report. He also faces a DUI charge.
Bail is set at $25,700.
