Published: January 21, 2009

HYDE PARK - The Historic Hyde Park Neighborhood Association is hosting a meeting Thursday to review plans for Bern's Park.

"It's been a long delay, but I think things are going to start happening soon," said association President Rosemary Henderson.

The area at Howard, Hills and De Soto avenues originally was named Luna Park. In 2003, then-Mayor Dick Greco renamed it Bern's Park after Bern's Steak House owner Bern Laxer. Laxer died in August 2002.

The city earmarked $220,000 for park renovations, including lighting, irrigation, a fountain and median landscaping on De Soto. The Historic Hyde Park Neighborhood Association agreed to contribute about $20,000.

The public meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Kate Jackson Center, 821 S. Rome Ave.

Evolution Sold As Theology

TAMPA - The Rev. Michael Dowd, a former anti-evolution fundamentalist, will speak about his book, "Thank God for Evolution: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World."

The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa, 11400 Morris Bridge Road.

Dowd, an ordained Christian minister, and his wife, Connie Barlow, a science writer, present programs that try to show evolution as theology, not theory, and science as divine revelation.

Plant City Eyes Parking Ban

PLANT CITY - Commissioners will vote Monday on a proposed ordinance prohibiting parking on portions of streets bordering the park and playground in Royal Hills subdivision.

President Christine Wynne and other Royal Hills homeowners association officers for the 373-home community on the city's west side, off State Road 574, raised safety concerns at a commission meeting.

Streets bordering the community park and playground on Country Hills Boulevard at Scarlet Maple Court are especially dangerous because children can dart between the parked cars, Wynne said.

At a public meeting Jan. 7, homeowners association representatives asked the city to proceed with an ordinance prohibiting parking at all times on select stretches of 22-foot-wide streets near the park and playground.

Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the ordinance during a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at city hall.
