Nuggets Lead With 3 Wins

PLANT CITY - Through the first week of play in Plant City Recreation Department/Optimist Youth Basketball, the Nuggets of the Premiere Boys League became the first team to hit the three-win mark.

Several were off to 2-0 starts including two teams apiece in the Cadet, Junior Boys, Junior Girls and Senior Boys leagues.

The Nuggets started play Jan. 8 with a 50-27 defeat of the Trailblazers as Brian Collins scored 15 points and Ricky Herring added 10. A night later, Blake Sparkman scored 16 points, and the Nuggets topped the Sonics 52-27; on Jan. 12, they beat the Rockets 41-26.

Also off to a good start in the Premiere League for 14- to 16-year-olds were the Heat with two victories. Charles Griffin had 21 points in a 50-41 defeat of the Braves on Jan. 12.

Two Premiere games in the first week were decided by one point: Cavs 35, Braves 34; and Rockets 47, Trailblazers 46 (Miles Tombrink had 22 points for the Rockets).

Jan. 10 was the first full day of action in the Cadet League for 8- and 9-year-olds, and at the end of things, the two 2-0 teams were the Grizzlies and the Bears. The closest matchup saw the Panthers beat the Colts 32-30 despite 20 points from Tyler Hood of the Colts.

The Spurs and Hornets were the first to the 2-0 mark in the Junior Boys League for 10- and 11-year-olds. Josh Gude had 14 points and Ben Padgett added 11 in the Spurs' 36-22 win over the Bulls, and Henry Yoho scored 10 to lead the Hornets over the Pacers 30-20.

In Junior Girls play, for 10- and 11-year-olds, the Liberty and Nets were off to 2-0 starts, with the Nets' wins coming by a combined six points.

Dustin McMath scored 20 points in helping the Magic to a 40-24 win over the Warriors, as the Magic went to 2-0 along with the 76'ers in the Senior Boys League for 12- and 13-year-olds.

Games are played at the Plant City Family YMCA along with Tomlin and Marshall middle schools.
