Publix Super Markets will hit a milestone in February when it opens its 1,000th store.
Lakeland-based Publix expects to open the supermarket in St. Augustine on Feb. 5. Dignitaries from St. Johns County and the Florida Historical Society will attend ceremonies, according to a written announcement from Publix.
Publix recently purchased 49 stores from Albertson's Inc., many of which are reopening as Publix supermarkets.
There are at least 714 Publix stores in Florida, where the company accounts for about 40 percent of the grocery market, according to figures from the Nielsen Co.'s Trade Dimensions unit.
Wal-Mart Supercenters rank second with about 24 percent of the state grocery market, then Winn-Dixie, which has about 13 percent.
Publix also has stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
The company was founded in 1930 in Winter Haven by the late George Jenkins.
