Revord Picks Penn State
Jesuit High senior Connor Revord, an all-state runner in both cross country and track his entire prep career and a first-team member of The Tampa Tribune's all-Hillsborough County cross country and track teams during the same time period, has made a verbal commitment to Penn State University.
"School wise and team-wise, I think it's a good fit for him," said Revord's father, David Revord, who has also helped coach his son at Jesuit. "They have a great team and there's a lot of talented guys on that squad in front of him that can push him."
Revord has been one of the state's top middle- and long-distance runners since he was a freshman. In his first season for the Tigers' cross country team, he finished seventh in the Class 2A state finals and went on to take 11th place his sophomore year, fifth as a junior and sixth last fall to lead Jesuit to second place in the team standings.
In track and field last spring, Revord anchored the Tigers to first place in the 4x800-meter relay and also earned the silver medal in both the 1,600 and 800 runs by taking second place to nationally ranked Tallahassee Godby star Joseph Franklin.
Last week, he was given the Ben Walker Award for male cross country runner of the year at the Hillsborough County Schools Fall Sports Awards.
By competing for Penn State in the Big Ten, Revord also will get to compete against a cousin, Ron Revord, who runs for Illinois.
FOOTBALL: Chamberlain senior defensive back Dametrius Turner has committed to the University of South Dakota, a Division I Championship Subdivision school.
Turner (5-foot-11, 170 pounds), had 43 tackles and one interception for the Chiefs, who advanced to the 5A region final this past season.
"He's fast and he moves to the ball well," Chamberlain assistant coach Brian Turner said. "He's a great man-to-man defender."
VOLLEYBALL: Tampa Prep senior outside hitter Alena Ransom, who this past season helped lead the Terrapins to the 2A state volleyball semifinals, will play for Emory University in the fall, Coach Mike Flynn said.
Ransom was named to the Tribune's All-Hillsborough County second team and ended her senior season with 321 kills, 64 blocks and 210 digs.
Emory won the NCAA Division III national volleyball championship this past season and was ranked No. 1 in the final national poll.
