MAX PAYNE *½
This big-screen adaptation of a video game (anyone still reading? Consider yourselves warned) stars Mark Wahlberg as a bitter cop trying to solve the murders of his wife and partner. His vigilante tactics lead him to a menacing drug called Valkyr which apparently has the power to summon random references to Norse mythology, including some "scary" winged beasts. PG-13; 99 minutes
CITY OF EMBER **
Based on the popular children's books by Jeanne Duprau, the movie is set in the underground city of Ember, whence humankind fled when the surface of the planet became uninhabitable. Saoirse Ronan stars as an orphan who begins to question the elaborate façade of life in Ember; she and another young one decide to escape. Bill Murray is the corrupt-yet-compelling mayor of the place. PG; 95 minutes
MOONLIGHT
"Twilight" addicts may be tempted by the DVD release of this ill-fated CBS series about a vampire P.I. named Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin) and the human investigative reporter (Sophia Myles) who catches his eye. Somewhat familiarly, Mick is tortured by his vampire nature and desperate to find a cure, yet his special powers sure come in handy for rescuing his gal pal from various scrapes. Not rated; 692 minutes
