TAMPA - A 24-year-old gang member was sentenced today to more than 21 years in federal prison for his role in the June 16 armed robbery of a Seffner gas station.
Decoursey Thephalus Beckles, a member of the Kountry Boyz street gang, pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence and to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Armed with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, Beckles robbed the Citgo Mart gas station and convenience store at 11305 Highway 92 E. Several people were inside the store when he fired four shots into the ceiling, prosecutors say.
One of the bullets ricocheted, landing near a child.
Driving a vehicle stolen from an acquaintance, Beckles led deputies on a chase through residential areas, reaching speeds of more than 70 mph. Beckles tried to accelerate toward a pursuing deputy, but his vehicle was disabled in a ditch. Deputies used a Taser to subdue Beckles when he resisted arrest, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Beckles later threatened the arresting deputy and his family, prosecutors said.
