PLANT CITY - A sinkhole opened today in a field at the edge of Whitelaw Road, threatening the pavement and an oak tree.
Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies blocked off Whitelaw at U.S. 92 while officials are examining the hole, which is about 15 feet deep.
The hole opened across Whitelaw from Candice Waters home. Waters said she didn't know anything was happening until she saw deputies looking at the sinkhole about 3 p.m. Later, she noticed her well water had turned murky.
No other homeowners reported problems and it wasn't clear when officials may try to start filling the void. Whitelaw is just east of Forbes Road, south of Interstate 4.
