TAMPA - The southbound 56th Street Bridge in East Tampa could be shut down for days while inspectors determine the severity of problems discovered Thursday morning by a maintenance crew.
Workers were replacing a handrail when they noticed the road and four of the bridge's beams had separated by an inch or two, possibly because of recent changes in temperature.
Officials aren't sure when the bridge, which spans the Hillsborough River, will be reopened.

Commission OKs No-Fee Policy
Builders in the area west of the University of South Florida will get a tax break for two more years.
Hillsborough County commissioners approved the area Thursday as a "no fee zone." The designation allows builders and developers to avoid paying road and right-of-way impact fees, and water and sewer capacity fees.
Such a designation is designed to encourage new growth and redevelopment in areas of economic decline. The commission determined that the area "remained a distressed area, and that the revitalization of that area would be furthered by the re-creation of the USF Zone" as outlined in the ordinance.
The designation reinstates one that began in 2003 but expired in October.
The area also is a state "enterprise zone," which means businesses that move to or expand in the community are eligible for tax credits.
