Alonso Lefty Selects USF

Alonso junior left-handed pitcher Thomas Dorminy has verbally committed to the University of South Florida, Ravens coach Landy Faedo said Friday.

Dorminy went 1-0 with a 2.17 ERA in six appearances (two starts) as a sophomore, striking out 28 and walking eight in 191/3 innings. His lone win came in a late-season start against Jefferson, when he pitched six innings and yielded just three hits while striking out 10.

Dorminy was one of two Alonso players selected to participate in the USA Youth National Team Trials during the summer, joining Ravens infielder Brandon Johnson. He is the second Hillsborough County junior baseball players to verbally pledge to the Bulls, joining Brandon outfielder James Ramsay.

SOFTBALL: Chamberlain junior third baseman/catcher Kasie Hatfield has verbally committed to Penn State, Chiefs coach Bob Diez said.

As a sophomore, Hatfield batted .362 with 21 hits, 14 runs scored and 18 RBIs. She also had six doubles and two home runs.

FOOTBALL: Chamberlain senior defensive backs Chris Frierson and Rico Valdez have verbally committed to the University of South Dakota, Chiefs assistant coach Brian Turner said.

Valdez and Frierson visited the South Dakota campus last weekend along with teammate Dametrius Turner, who verbally committed to the Football Championship Subdivision program earlier this week.

Valdez was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team pick as a senior after recording 47 tackles and two interceptions. Frierson, a Tribune all-county honorable-mention pick, had a team-high five interceptions along with 44 tackles.
