TAMPA - Scott Linehan will not be running the Bucs offense after all.
Linehan, the former Rams head coach who was believed to be the leading candidate to become the Bucs' new offensive coordinator, signed on to run the Lions offense instead Friday.
It could not immediately be determined whether Linehan, who earlier this week turned down an offer to run the 49ers offense, passed on the Bucs or the Bucs passed on Linehan.
Linehan's hiring came as reports surfaced that the Bucs were denied permission to speak to Chiefs coordinator Chan Gailey about the post and have added Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese to their list of candidates.
The Bucs have also expressed an interest in talking to former Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski about the job and have listed their own quarterbacks coach, Greg Olson, as one of the candidates.
The Bucs also have interviewed Patriots tight ends coach Pete Mangurian for a position on their staff, but Mangurian is not a candidate to become the team's offensive coordinator.
