MIAMI - The Florida Highway Patrol says three children were killed when an SUV hit their father's minivan in south Miami-Dade.
FHP Lt. Pat Santangelo says the accident happened around 5:30 a.m. Sunday as the minivan was stopped at a red light with the children in the minivan's backseat. A Chevrolet Trailbrazer slammed into the rear of the minivan, knocking it across the intersection and crushing its rear end.
The children - Hector Serrano, 10, and his sisters, Esmeralda, 7, and Amber, 4 - were pronounced dead at the scene. Their father, Hector S. Serrano, 42, suffered minor injuries. The Trailblazer's driver, Gabriel Delrisco, 40, was taken to a hospital by helicopter. His condition was unknown.
Officials are investigating whether alcohol was involved in the crash.
