TAMPA - Food left cooking on a stove caused a fire late Saturday night in an apartment building on Manhattan Avenue.
Tampa Fire Rescue said the tenant of the Bay Vistas Apartments unit left the apartment briefly while food was still on the stove and a few minutes later he and others noticed his apartment was on fire.
Firefighters arrived at the complex at 4004 S. Manhattan Ave. about 10:30 p.m. Saturday and kept fire and smoke damage limited to the apartment occupied by Ronald Arned, 45. There was also water damage to the apartment below, the fire department said.
Residents of the building unsuccessfully tried to use extinguishers to put out the fire.
There were no injuries and the fire department estimated damage was at least $10,000. The American Red Cross is helping Arned find temporary living arrangements.
