Marve Decision To Come After Signing Day

Published: January 25, 2009

TAMPA - Former University of Miami and Plant High quarterback Robert Marve is still considering several schools and won't make a decision on where he will transfer until sometime after National Signing Day, Feb. 4, Plant coach Robert Weiner said.

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Texas Tech and the University of South Florida are the schools currently receiving the strongest consideration, Weiner said. Marve wants to wait until the schools have completed their recruiting classes, Weiner said.

"It's still an on-going process," Weiner said. "There are a lot of schools that are interested."

As a UM freshman last season, Marve threw for 1,293 yards, nine TDs and 13 interceptions, but was suspended for the Hurricanes' bowl game. In December, Marve announced he was transferring from Miami, but the school initially prohibited Marve from transferring to any ACC, SEC or state school.

UM later said Marve could transfer to any SEC school other than UF, UT or LSU and also added USF and UCF as possible destinations.

When Miami loosened its restrictions, Marve's father, Eugene Marve, told the Tampa Tribune then he wasn't happy UM wasn't allowing a transfer to Florida, Tennessee or LSU.

"We value and want to honor every opportunity," Eugene Marve said on Jan. 8.

"Miami originally said we talked to [UF, UT and LSU], but we never talked to them. It's become a turf war between Miami and Florida and my son is a pawn in this."

Eugene Marve also told the Tribune his son had the option of attending "a school of our choice" without receiving an athletic scholarship, which is allowable under NCAA rules. If Marve "walks on" to another program, Miami has no say in what school he can attend. Apparently, though, according to a story in Sunday's Miami Herald, that is no longer a realistic option.
